Kelp
|
|
Kelp is the most common sea vegetable. It contains a natural, whole food source of iodine, which is a compulsory nutrient for the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located in the neck and regulates metabolism. A difficiency of iodine can lead to weight gain, lack of energy, and mental sluggishness. Kelp also contains high concentrations of Calcium (156mg) and Magnesium(104mg) per 3oz serving. Every mineral and trace element needed by the body is contained in this wonderful food. Kelp contains vitamins A, C, D, E, and B complex including B12. Kelp is harvested by special boats that use a large hook that pulls the kelp plant up from the ocean. Then, the tops are cut off and brought back to the boat. The kelp is then cut and dehydrated. It has been used in the treatment of thyroid problems, poor digestion, hair loss, and ulcers. It is known to be helpful for the sensory nerves, spinal cord, brain tissue, and for strengthening weak nails. Kelp powder is also used as a salt alternative, but it is most commonly consumed in capsuled or tablet form. |
